Laboratory Testing

Analytical testing

  1. Analytical testing involves simple examination with the microscope as well as instrumental test methods. On existing buildings, the results of our examination and testing are important in understanding conditions and deterioration mechanisms. With new construction, analytical testing helps in problem solving.
  • Acid Solubility
This test measures the percent acid soluble component of a masonry sample to assess its vulnerability to deterioration by acidic precipitation.
  • Salt testing
Salt testing includes measuring chloride, sulfate and nitrate salts that are present as contaminants. Salt identification helps to identify causes of general and localized deterioration and also is useful in designing an appropriate cleaning program.
  • Soiling and contaminants identification
Preliminary identification of soiling and contaminants is made using a stereomicroscope. Following this examination, further instrumental testing may be recommended.
  • Substrate identification
Identification of the mineralogical composition of the sample is determined through examination with a petrographic microscope and x‑ray diffraction analysis.
